Suggestions for Preparing an Effective Proposal

(and an Effective Presentation)

The Conference organisers always receive far more proposals than can be accommodated in the programme.  Inevitably, this means that it is not possible to accept every proposal, and so some people will be disappointed.

You will increase the likelihood of your proposal being accepted if you follow this advice carefully :

 1.       Make sure that your proposal (on a separate sheet) is no more than 150 words in length

 2.       Make sure that your proposal is clearly related to the theme of the conference, Competency-Based English Teaching : Theory and Reality.

 3.       Make sure that your proposal is clearly related to one of the three key areas:

1. What does ‘competency-based’ teaching mean?

2. What are the implications of a ‘competency-based’ approach?

3. What does ‘competency-based’ language education look like in practice?

 4.       Make clear what audience you expect for your presentation :

1. English teachers in schools

2. English lecturers in universities

3. Researchers

4. Policy makers/managers

5. Textbook writers

6. Others (please explain)

 5.       Make sure that the bio data for each speaker is no more than 50 words in length.

The Conference organisers are especially keen to see examples of concrete research and of practical ideas.

A concrete research study means an analysis of data.  It does not have to be very ambitious or very large scale : a small case study is also acceptable.  Also, it does not have to make use of statistics : a qualitative approach is just as acceptable as a quantitative one.  What is important is that :

·          the way in which the data was collected is clear

·          the data is presented clearly

·          the way in which the data is analysed is clear

·          the conclusions are clearly based on the analysis of the data

·          the limitations of the study are clear

·          the recommendations are clearly related to the conclusions.

A presentation of practical ideas is based on classroom experience (or experience in other contexts, such as designing materials or evaluation procedures).  What is important is :

·          the context in which this idea was first developed is clear

·          the objective of the practical idea is clear

·          the benefits of the idea are clearly presented

·          the possible disadvantages of the idea are clear.

Other types of presentation are also acceptable.
