BACKGROUND
The English in Southeast Asia conference series is
the result of collaboration among member universities from seven
countries: Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines, Australia, Hong
Kong and Indonesia. Since 1996 the conference has been held annually and
has been hosted in rotation by a member university in different
countries. For the first time the conference will take place in
Indonesia, hosted by Sanata Dharma University and organized by the
Graduate Program of English Language Studies, the Undergraduate Program
of English Letters, the Undergraduate Program of English Education,
English Extension Course and the Language Centre.
AIMS
English is a world language with varieties different
from those spoken in countries where English is a native language.
Accordingly, English has also acquired specific statuses and roles in
different disciplines, geographic locations and social spheres. To be
fully functional, learners of English must be familiar with their
respective specific and local variety without abandoning the general
and global nature of English. The learning and teaching of English
require the identification of the relevant statuses, roles and
varieties as well as their environments or, more specifically, the
texts and the contexts. This 9th ESEA conference will focus
on issues of English statuses, roles, varieties and instructional
materials as well as the contexts of the teaching and learning of
English in Southeast Asia in particular and the Asia-Pacific region in
general.
SUB-THEMES
The conference will discuss a number of sub-themes
which include the following:
1. English in social sciences
and humanity studies
2. English in natural and
physical sciences
3. English and life-skill based
learning
4. English in
multilingual/cultural communities
5. linguistic descriptions of
English varieties
6. English in informational
technology
7. corpus-based research on
varieties of English
8. instructional implications of
varieties of English
9. professional development for
the teachers of English
PLENARY SPEAKERS
The conference will invite
academic dignitaries as plenary speakers, who will be announced soon
after confirmation is received.
